Set Up Your Tesla App

The Tesla app is your primary tool for monitoring and managing your solar and battery system. After installation, add your Powerwall to the app and connect it to your home’s Wi-Fi network. Once connected, the app will begin displaying system performance, energy flow, battery status, and notifications.

Through the Tesla app, you can:

  • Monitor solar production
  • Track battery charging and discharging
  • View home energy consumption
  • Manage Powerwall settings
  • Receive system updates and alerts

Monitor Your System in the Tesla App

The Tesla app provides a real-time view of your energy system. From the home screen, you can see:

  • Current solar production
  • Battery charging or discharging activity
  • Home energy consumption
  • Utility grid usage

The animated energy flow diagram shows exactly where power is being generated, stored, and consumed. This should be your primary source for confirming that your system is operating normally.

The app also provides access to energy insights, saved documents, account settings, notifications, and system controls.

Understand Your Energy Data

The Energy tab allows you to review both real-time and historical system performance.

You can view:

  • Solar production
  • Home energy usage
  • Powerwall activity
  • Electricity imported from the grid
  • Electricity exported to the grid

Data can be reviewed by day, week, month, year, or lifetime. Keep in mind that solar production naturally changes due to weather, seasonality, and household energy usage patterns.

When evaluating system performance, focus on long-term trends rather than a single day’s production.

Customize How Your Powerwall Operates

 

Tesla Powerwall offers flexible operating modes that allow you to prioritize either energy independence or utility bill savings.

Backup Reserve

Backup Reserve sets aside a portion of battery capacity for power outages.

  • Higher reserve = more outage protection
  • Lower reserve = more daily battery usage

Self-Powered Mode

This mode prioritizes using your own solar production and stored battery energy before drawing power from the utility grid.

Time-Based Control

This mode automatically uses utility pricing schedules to maximize energy savings by charging and discharging strategically throughout the day.

You can adjust these settings directly within the Tesla app.

Automatic Storm Preparation with Storm Watch

Storm Watch helps prepare your home for potential utility outages caused by severe weather.

When Tesla detects conditions that may lead to grid outages, Powerwall automatically charges to full capacity and maintains a higher state of charge until the event passes.

Benefits include:

  • Increased backup energy before storms
  • Automatic operation with no homeowner action required
  • Notifications through the Tesla app

Storm Watch can be enabled or disabled through your Powerwall settings.

What Happens During a Power Outage?

When utility power is interrupted, Powerwall automatically provides backup power to supported loads in your home.

The Tesla app allows you to simulate an outage using Go Off-Grid mode, helping you learn how your system will behave during a real grid interruption.

During an outage:

  • Powerwall powers protected circuits
  • Solar can continue recharging the battery during daylight hours
  • The Tesla app tracks backup history and performance

Backup duration varies based on battery capacity, solar production, and household energy use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Open the Tesla App and look for solar production on the Energy screen. If solar production is greater than zero during daylight hours, your system is producing energy.

The battery percentage shown in the app will increase throughout the day as excess solar energy is stored.

Your home’s energy demand can sometimes exceed solar production or available battery power, especially at night, during cloudy weather, or when large appliances are operating.

This is often normal. Battery charging depends on solar production, your home’s energy usage, weather conditions, and your current Powerwall settings.

On cloudy days or during periods of high home energy consumption, there may not be enough excess solar energy available to fully charge the battery.

It is normal to see higher production on some days and lower production on others. Focus on weekly and monthly trends rather than individual days.

Solar panels only produce energy when exposed to sunlight.

At night, your home may be powered by your Powerwall battery, the utility grid, or a combination of both depending on your settings and available battery charge.

The system may have temporarily lost its internet connection.

Check that your home internet service is active and functioning properly. If the connection is restored, the Tesla app typically begins reporting data again automatically.
