Post-Storm Damage? Check This Key Prevention Guide

Winter storms in Southern California can bring heavy rain, gusty winds, and humid conditions that leave homeowners wondering: Did my roof hold up? Is my solar still working? Should I worry about moisture inside?

This 5‑minute scan helps you spot early signs of leaks, performance issues, or humidity problems so you can address them before they become costly repairs.

1. Roof Check (1 minute)

You don’t need to climb onto the roof—just take a slow look from ground level and inside your attic (if accessible).

What to look for outside:

  • Missing or lifted shingles/tiles
  • Debris buildup (branches, leaves, pooled water)
  • Visible sagging along the roofline
  • Downspouts disconnected or overflowing

What to look for inside:

  • Darkened ceiling spots
  • Drips or new moisture rings
  • Musty smell near attic access

Storms often reveal issues that weren’t visible during dry months. A quick visual check can catch small problems before they spread into insulation, electrical runs, or drywall.

2. Solar System Check (1 minute)

Even if your panels look fine, storms can temporarily affect performance.

Quick homeowner checks:

  • Look for debris on panels (leaves, branches, dirt splatter)
  • Confirm your monitoring app shows normal production for the weather
  • Confirm your inverter or battery app shows “online” status
  • Is the light on for your inverter?

If generation appears unusually low compared to similar weather days, your panels may simply need cleaning—or, less commonly, a connector or microinverter may need inspection.

Your monitoring app is your best friend here: if production drops sharply or a component flags an alert, it’s worth scheduling a diagnostic check.

3. Heating and AC System Check (1 minute)

Storm humidity and temperature swings can place extra load on both heating and cooling systems.

Inside the home:

  • Is the thermostat responsive?
  • Does the system turn on without unusual sounds?
  • Do you notice excess indoor humidity or foggy windows?

Outside (heat pump or AC condenser):

  • Clear debris (leaves, mulch, branches caught in the fan guard)
  • Ensure the unit has 12–24 inches of open airflow around it
  • Check for unusual rattling or vibration

Humidity after storms can strain older systems or clogged filters, so this is also a perfect time to:

  • Replace your HVAC filter
  • Check return grilles for blockages

A clean filter is one of the easiest ways to improve airflow, reduce stress on your equipment, and prevent mustiness.

4. Moisture & Indoor Air Quality Check (1 minute)

Post‑storm humidity can contribute to musty smells, microbial growth, and indoor comfort issues.

Walk through high‑risk areas:

  • Bathrooms
  • Laundry rooms
  • Kitchens
  • Around windows and sliding doors

Look for:

  • Condensation on windows
  • Damp baseboards
  • Musty odors in closets
  • Persistent dampness near exterior walls
  • Extreme dust on returns, vents, or air ducts

If your home comfort system ran continuously during storms, or if air feels sticky indoors, the home may benefit from improved filtration, better duct sealing, or dehumidification.

5. Safety & Systems Scan (1 minute)

Whole‑home safety checks:

  • Any breakers tripped?
  • Any exposed wiring outdoors?
  • Any strange smells from outlets, attic, or garage?
  • Any water around your water heater or softening/conditioning system?
  • Double check those surge protectors, are they being overloaded?

Electrical systems and water equipment can be stressed during prolonged moisture exposure, especially in homes with older infrastructure.
